Garden Bloggers Bloom Day - June 2008

Happy bloom day to all of your Garden Bloggers. Carol at May Dreams Garden has us all rounded up showing the blooms of June that is happening in our gardens. If you want to seem more go to her blog and you will see gorgeous blooms from all over the country and other countries as well.If you want to participate just post your blooms and then go to her site and leave a comment on the 15th of each month. Today I want to start off showing you one of the dark burgandy lilies in the garden. It has some blooming sedum at its feet. Not far from the lilies we have some Eremrus or as I like to call them Foxtail Lilies that are about to finish their display. They are such a striking addition to the garden. They make quite a statement then fade away to nothing letting me forget them until next spring.
One of my favorite daylilies are blooming. I don'tknow the name of this one but it blooms again in fall so I really appreciate its hard work while looking beautiful.Ihave some astilbe that I have had so long and moved so many times that I don't have a clue as to what it's name is. I remember that I had a fanal at one time but who knows? I sure don't. It really likes this spot. I have moved it becasue it wouldn't bloom most other places. Here it gets lovely dark foilage and it blooms which is always a bonus.
This Dutch Honeysuckle is blooming up a storm. The bumble bees really like this as well as the hummingbirds.
The Jackmanni clematis is blooming up a storm. It has really grown tall this year. I guess all the rain this spring has helped it along.
St Fiacre is still tending the Tradescantia 'Sweet Kate'. The tag said that it would attract butterflies. Harumph. I have seen none on this even though I like the pretty chartruese foilage. I hope it soon does as the tag suggests. I would at least like to see bees on it but nothing so far.
One of my favorites of summer is the Datura. It has its first bloom. It has several buds but this is the first one open. I just love how rich and tropical these beauties appear. The moths they attract are amazing. I hope to see them soon too. Maybe when there are several blooming at once I will get a picture.
This wraps up what I can show you as I have misplaced my camera. Geez. I think I left it at work. I took pictures of the clown parade at work today and must have set my camera down in the shop someplace. The other blooms I can think of are daisies, another tall lily and several other day lilies. Maybe next time I can show you more...

  1. Lisa, that day lilly is really interesting. I've never seen anything quite like it before. I'll have to check out your other blog as I'm an artist too.

  3. My goodness you ladies are up early this morning. I wish I knew what kind of day lily it is Sarah.

Sandy I am glad you like the lillies. You are most welcome.

  4. Lisa, I was wondering what YOU were doing up so early, but then Sundays are bird-watching days, aren't they? Enjoyed seeing all your blooms. Your astilbe look great--you'll have to tell me your secret to getting them to bloom so well!

  5. Rose you are right about sundays being bird watching days but today is Father's Day and I am heading down to my Sister's house shortly to celebrate with Norb, my dad, and other family members. It will be a good day.

    P.S. I found my camera.

  7. I have been enjoying my 'Sweet Kate' but haven't seen any butterflies near it. I also love Foxtail Lilies but don't see them that often.

  8. Lisa, your flowers are beautiful. I love the day lily and as pretty as it is who needs a name?! The datura-is that a perennial? And if so what is it's zone tolerance? I didn't find it in the flower listing site I go to. We saw the Dutch honeysuckle at the Idea garden and I loved the huge flowers and it's now on my wish list. Give Uncle Norb and all my love!

  9. Wow, your flowers are so pretty!! I wish my yard looked half as good as your does!!

  10. Datura is one of my favorite summer flowers too, and I also like it for the prickly seedhead it makes in fall. Alas, I had it last year, but not this year.

  11. Hi Lisa.....All beautiful blooms but my favourite is the foxtail lily.....I love them. Mine seems to have disappeared this year but that happens with plants, doesn't it.
    Glad you found your camera.

  13. Your flowers are beautiful. I have never seen the Eremrus before. It is very striking. Your gardens are a lot further along than ours in east central Indiana (north of Indy).

  14. What wonderful blooms in your garden. That daylily looks like one I had that disappeared on me. Could it be 'Strawberry Candy'?

Thanks for getting up early to post for bloom day. I hope you had a good father's day!

  16. I love 'em all, Lisa. I didn't know you could grow datura up there. For some reason I thought it was more of a southern plant.

  17. A beautiful collection of blooms, Lisa. I'm kind of partial to the day lily. Your Datura is blooming before ours.

  22. And I thought I already had a lot of bloom in my garden. Hmmmm. But the roses and the peonies are coming! this Bloom Day is the beginning of the season for them - and they will be pretty well be gone by next Bloom Day so I hope you visit the Commonweeder.

  23. Foxtail lilies are definitely not common around here. They look quite stately. Is Datura the night-scented one or is it the other trumpet-shaped vine I'm thinking of. Whatever, it is beautiful. I look forward to seeing shots of moths visiting it (when you find your camera).

  24. It's always so interesting to see how far advanced the rest of the world is compared to us. I love datura but can't grow it here -- too much frost. Our honeysuckle shrub is in bloom right now too and the tulips and lilacs are just about finished. That's a beauty of a daylily. Ours will be in bloom in July. I hope my peony blooms before the end of the month -- oh well, it's nice just to have things green!

  25. Ooh - I too am in love with your foxtail lilies. I adore them but can't grow them. I'm glad they do well for you, anyway. And your 'Sweet Kate' shot is fantastic. My plants tend to scorch at the leaf tips, but yours look perfect. Thanks for sharing, Lisa!

  26. Dear Lisa,
I will have to do a search on Foxtail Lilies...they look very wonderful. I enjoy seeing all your blooms. So very pretty!

  27. That looks like 'Fanal' to me, and I have had the same problem with it! I've had it in three different spots and while it bloomed this year and last, it's not lush like 'Peach Blossom.' I just got a new one today - 'Colorflash'. I actually already have one, but it's a temperamental one, too. The new purchase is a very large one already, so I'll have to site it carefully or I'll end up with another small one.

I'm so jealous of your Foxtail lilies! Mom and I bought some at the Columbus Home and Garden Show last year and we planted them, but neither of us ever saw a thing from them. :-(

  28. Do you have some kind of magic touch, Lisa? You're growing stuff that we don't usually connect with Indiana at all! Do the foxtail lilies live outdoors all year or do you have to lift them like dahlias or cannas? They're quite striking.

My 'Sweet Kate' has just been moping since it was planted but yours looks wonderful. Could the problem be that my statue is of St Francis and yours is St Fiacre?

    Lovely blooming day, Lisa!

  29. Is Tradescantia the same as spiderwort?? It sure looks like it. Great, great plant that never stops. I love the color of the first lily.

  30. I am so glad you all liked my bloom day post. I feel like I had more to show but this is all that I got up. Thank you for stopping by and leaving me a comment.

In answer to some of the questions I received:

Nan, Tradescantia is a Spider wort.

Beckie, Datura is a perennial here. I would imagine it would survive where you live. If not the parent plant it also reseeds itself here. I am not sure of the zone hardiness. I could send you some seeds. I have seedlings too. Wish you lived closer.

Carol, that daylily could be Strawberry Candy. I just don't know. I can't find that name in my journals. Santa Claus is not close to where I live. I live further west from there. Did you go to Santa Claus Land? A fun place to ride roller coasters.

MrMcD, this Datura is more of a bush than a vine. It does have a light scent at night. I will try for moth pictures.

Annie, The Foxtail lillies stay in the ground here. They completely die back during summer. I have forgotten that they are where they are and dug up their thick roots only to put them back into the ground and they have survived. The even amaze me.

As to 'Sweet Kate' she must be a favorite of St Fiacra because she died to the ground during the drought last summer and came out this spring bigger and better than ever. Maybe she snubbed St Frances at some point?? tee hee.

  31. You have some lovely blooms in your garden, Lisa!
The dark red lily is gorgeous, and I love your daylily too.
I'm growing Datura for the first time this year. It's an annual here, but the seeds are easy to save.
My Jackmanii isn't blooming yet but the Clematis 'Carnaby' is looking lovely.
I'm glad you found your camera :)

  32. Hi there Lisa :-)

Gosh... I thought I had left a comment here but I see I commented on one of my posts. Sorry :-)

I love the blooms in your garden but my favs are the fox tail lilies and the Tradescantia 'Sweet Kate' the later being my garden colours. I hope you eventually see butterflies on it. I like that plant a lot - I really should get one for my garden :-D

    Have a great weekend :-D

  33. I wonder whether it was only the rain which made your clematis Jackmanii grow so well (we had a lot of rain too, but the same clematis "died"). Probably you have very good soil. I love the red lily (I never was lucky to grow them). My tradescantie is still new and I'm glad I could see yours blooming!
    Have a wonderful weekend, Lisa!
