Friday Flowers

While the hydrangeas pout about the weather I have tried not to complain. They are doing a good job of complaining for me. They appear as I feel in this record setting heat we have been having.
The daylilies on the other hand have not sucumb to the elements.
They put on their cheerful faces.
Bloom their little hearts out.
Not one complaint is heard from them.
Even though their foliage doesn't add a lot to the overall look of the garden, I can't deny that their cheerful blooms put a smile on my face.

Even the small ones that flirt with the gazing ball.

I hope you all have a great weekend. Stay cool. Enjoy all those smiling faces in your garden.

  1. Whew... stay cool is right. It's 96 in the shade here and the air is even hot. :c) Love seeing your beautiful lilies!

  2. Your daylilies are so sweet and uncomplaining. I love all the varieties in your garden.

  3. The daylilies are such soldiers, Lisa, I agree. They don't seem to mind the heat at all and since the flowers only last one day anyway, the heat and drought here haven't lessened the show. Now we don't want to talk about the Liliums, another story completely. May we both get a break from this weather, but not too much the other way either. Be careful what we wish for.

  5. This is the best year yet for my daylilies, which are just coming out en masse now. I love yours, especially the deep red-orange one.

  7. The daylilies are beautiful. Our hydrangeas are holding up pretty well to the heat. At least we have received regular rains, which helps tremendously.

  8. It's supposed to be sweltering hot here too.

My daylilies can always be counted on to do well in any weather. Such reliable, carefree plants.

  9. Hi Lisa....poor hydrangeas, I know exactly how they feel. Our temperatures have risen to 26C
(86F). Rain has been in very short supply.......we really do need some.

Daylillies are lovely....they never do particularly well here....I have given up on them.

    Have a lovely weekend......

  10. I'm not a huge daylily fan and even I appreciate their color--the first one, purple with skinny leaves, is AWESOME! I have this crazy idea actually to plant out the last of my seedlings (I know it's late!) this weekend.

  11. Daylilies aren't the most sophisticated plants, but they sure are workhorses. You've got a lovely assortment. I especially like the first one. I can't seem to find one that will bloom that color in my garden. I hope you get some relief from the heat.

  12. The ones that flirt with the gazing ball are nice... but I really LOVE the way they others flirt with the chartreuse hosta in that last pic! Have a great weekend. :)

  13. I like your purple spider daylily. Because the daylilies are so easy going, you rarely have to fuss over them. I had one volunteer that came up half under the sidewalk, next to my water tap. I kept meaning to move it, but then it would be in bloom, and cheer me up as I went to the tap, so it's grown squished in there for a few year now.

  15. Your lilies are amazing.

My hydrangea have been very sensitive about the weather, too. They are acting like impatiens!

  16. Dear Lisa,
Your lilies are lovely. I need to get some weeding done so I can see mine. We had 15 inches of rain while I was on vacation....

  17. Your daylilies are gorgeous, Lisa--I agree they seem to thrive in spite of the heat.

Since I'm so late in getting here, I hope by today you're enjoying some relief from the heat and rain as we are. I think it was only 60 when I got up this morning--yippee!

  18. The gazing globe seems to provide a slick relief from the heat. I love the reflections within.

  19. Lisa I wish that I could come over to your garden and do a rain dance!
I did in my own and guess what we've had several good overnight rainfalls which has cooled things off and made all my hydrangeas happy and as you saw even one of my peony bushes!! 3 blossoms left!
Do the happy rain dance!!Singing in the rain..la.la..la

  20. Loved the smiling faces there Lisa! Have a young daylily in my front garden at the moment. Hoping it will enjoy the sun there. It has flower buds at the moment. Hope it doesn't flower when we are on hols.

Good to hear you've had a break from your high temps since posting this... hope you, Lily and all your hostas and ferns are enjoying it :-D

  21. After all the heat it is Very Cool here. 50 degrees early this am. We brought the worm bin from outside because they don't like temps below 50 and it did get down to the 40s. Every other plant in the garden is happy, but the daylilies aren't blooming. Yours are so beautiful.

  22. I'm so sorry about the heat Lisa. Those daylilies love it though. We must plant our hydrangeas in the shade to avoid the heat here, and it's a lot of work to keep them very happy. Hope it cools off there soon.~~Dee

  23. You're right, dear Lisa, the daylilies put a smile on the face....on mine too. It's for me the flower of the month of July. They just start to show their whole beauty.

  24. Lisa,
Our daylily foliage looks the worst it ever has this year, between lack of water and the heat they just look horrible. We’ve just started to get rain here the last couple of weeks so everything is looking a little better. We have that drip system and have been watering regularly, but it just isn’t the same as rain. It keeps the plants alive but I think the chlorine does more harm than good.

Could you please send me your mailing address to the email link on my profile page? We would be happy for you to have some of those Crocosmia.

  25. I hope your beautiful daylilies are still opening buds, Lisa - remember how July was their month in IL. Also love the purple one!

  26. Those day lilies are wonderful Lisa. I have 2 sorts, that's all. I love that dark red one, it's beautiful. They are an unfussy, rewarding plant I think.
