Garden Bloggers Bloom Day - June 2017

I am so happy that I waited until this morning to write my GBBD post. I had been feeling as miserable as my garden looked prior to midnight last night when a frightful thunder storm raged through here.  This storm brought the first rain of June to the garden. I mean to tell  you the first drop of rain. I thought our poor garden was doomed. Amazing what 3/4" of rain will do for your flowers let alone One's own spirit.
The stars of the garden right now are the day lilies. Most of mine are old fashioned varieties such as the one above, Paper Butterfly.
Screech Owl
Bubbly
And most appropriately named June Bug. The rest of them blooming now are fairly tame looking compared to all the fancy varieties available now. Am I showing my gardening age?? I love them all anyway.
Day lilies aren't the only things blooming right now of course.
I have several tall lilies in the garden. This one is Heartstrings. The rest of them look so worn from the drought that I won't picture them.
The Coneflowers are beginning to bloom.
This Papaya Coneflower is a new introduction to my garden this year and it is gorgeous. Even with the droughty weather it has been blooming.
The Oakleaf Hydrangeas are blooming. I don't know the names of them but they are also a plant that doesn't pay much attention to the weather. I wish I was more like them. This one has big ole blooms on it.
This one has more blooms but smaller.
The spiderworts are blooming up a storm.
Yuccas are blooming. I always think of them as one of my birthday flowers as it blooms near my birthday.
These lovely Calla Lily 'Golden Nugget' is blooming now. They are such cheerful bloomers and make great cut flowers. Then you have this poka dotted leaves to accent the flower bed. Amazing that these used to be considered annuals here. Now what with the global warming they survive our winters. At least so far.
The above Hibiscus is a tropical plant that my neighbor gave me when she was moving into a condo with no room for such a large plant/planter. I didn't really want the plant but the container came with it and I did want the container. After it started blooming I can see why she wanted it to perpetuate. It is a gorgeous bloom.
What all is blooming in your garden? You can share your blooms with me and others from all over the world at Carol's May Dreams Garden where this meme of many years has flourished. Do share...

  3. Thank you Debbie. I have some of those wild orange ones blooming too. It is amazing how deep the orange/red they have been I guess because of the droughty conditions. I hope to have a good weekend. You too.

  6. I can sympathize with the chill that runs down your spine when Mother Nature fails to deliver rain on her regular schedule. Our rain is almost exclusively a winter phenomenon as befits our Mediterranean climate, but when even our winter rains are dramatically reduced for several years, it's frightening. I'm glad you rains have returned. I'm very envious of your daylilies.

  8. I know exactly how you feel, Lisa--I thought I was going to whine and complain for my Bloom Day post until that glorious rain shower arrived Wednesday night. We've been working overtime at the Nursing Home garden getting ready for Saturday's Walk, and even the Oakleaf Hydrangeas were drooping in this heat and drought. Love all your daylilies, but then I've never met a daylily I didn't like:)

  9. Lisa girl I am thinking the weather bothers you as much as it bothers me (another cast to our age ? LOL) .. your garden is looking amazing with so little rain .. I love that papaya echinacea! I want one too now, haha. I was reading you previous post and picture, love seeing you in them and love that hat girl : )
Hey .. some of those older varieties can slap down the new ones with their staying power ..so not everything new is better right ?
Thanks for dropping by girl .. I appreciate it ... enjoy your garden but take care while at it !
    Joy : )

  12. I have tried and tried to grow coneflowers. Even if they manage to run the gauntlet of the slugs they never come back a second year. But I love them and am totally envious of yours, especially the new one.

  13. You have an amazing collection of Daylilies! I'm glad you finally got some nice rain. We were having a bit of a drought for a while, too. The double-whammy was the heat on top of no rain. All the plants sighed with relief when the rains came. Yours seem very happy, too. :)

  16. Don't let anyone shame you for using older daylily cultivars. The blue eye on 'Paper Butterfly' looks just as nice as some of the new flowers being hybridized. We have a few members in our local Daylily Club who seem to want the newest thing, and some of them will offer arguments on why everyone should be this way. It works for them and their collection must be humongous. We try to buy for the characteristics we love in a daylily...in our case large flowers on tall scapes, preferably unusual forms. After all, you need to love the flowers in your garden, no sense in watering and weeding things you hate.

    1. Isn't it the truth Rebecca. I wouldn't be found nurturing a plant I don't like.

  17. Love the daylilies and all the other beauties growing for you. Even with drought? I'm impressed. In Toronto, we're having the opposite extreme: too much rain. Curious about your Asiatic lily... don't you have problems with the red lily leaf beetle? It has devastated all the lilies (formerly) in my garden.

    1. So far Helen I haven't had to deal with a lily leaf beetle. I sure hope they don't find my garden.
