A Spot of Rain

I am in the throes of frustration. I have bought a new phone. My new phone is 5 upgrades.  That should tell you all you need to know. It is making me crazy trying to get all set up where I can easily use it. Yet it gets worse. I can't figure out how to download photos to where I want them. Needless to say I went into the garden to try to find comfort. Found it I did.
As you can see on one of the last daylilies blooming in the garden we got a spot of rain today. I emptied 1/2 inch from the rain gauge and a bonus was there was a drowned Japanese Beetle in the gauge. Does that sound mean? I don't think so. The rascal was probably buzzing around looking for lunch when it fell into the gauge.
A nice result from this bit of moisture is that one of the last of the tall lilies opened. It was waiting for a good drink of rain. I had watered it yesterday but it wasn't satisfied until the clouds cooperated.

The beautiful Strawberry Vanilla Hydrangea perked right up too. It is covered with blooms. My favorite hydrangea.

Another that benefited from this shot of moisture is the tiny start of my moss garden.
You can't see it very well but it is growing. I need to get out there and pull some grass and weeds from around the moss as it grows.
I am pleased that you can actually see the moss patch now. If I can just keep the violets out of it all will be well.
And finally the little patch of tall garden phlox was wafting fragrance on the heavy air. The best aroma therapy.  It gave me the sense of calm I needed.
I hope you are having a calm restorative time.

  3. OH wow - that hydrangea is amazing! It's seems funny that you are encouraging moss where you have grass. A somewhat common sight over here is sprays to control moss in the lawn. I like it all and don't like sprays so have both. There are some really beautiful mosses. One kind gets the tiniest white flowers. They are like something from a fairytale.

  4. I love moss. I would like to get some other types to grow here. It is so pretty and serene. I have always liked a good fairy tale.

  5. I think I have that same daylily. It's a beauty as is the tall one. Love your moss and I am sure it enjoyed the rain and watering. We got a little rain Friday night after a day spent dividing and transplanting. After all our crazy early rain it has been really hot and dry.

  6. My phone is so old, I keep intending to get a new one but I dread just the very things that are frustrating you. Maybe I could get one of the grandkids to help me set it up:) Your moss patch looks fantastic! My 'Strawberry Vanilla' is also about ready to bloom; such a great hydrangea!

  7. Rain! How lucky. We managed to get 1/8" last week, but won't see any again for a while according to the long range forecast. Your blooms are looking so cheerful. Thanks for sharing.

  8. Lisa girl I LOVE your hydrangea !!! and day lily too of course. The moss path is cute but yes it needs so much moisture .. we are so deadly dry and hot here .. I am so grateful for the sprinkler system .. otherwise my gardens would be toast !
My phone is so basic .. thank heavens ! but I so understand your frustrations .. tech things drive me CRAZY ! LOL
Nice cooling post girl : )

  10. Hi Lisa,
I am so glad you had some rain. I can see your smiling from here:)
Beautiful lilies. I have lost most of mine to the dreaded lily beetle sigh. I obviously was not as vigilant as I should have been. I have decided to stop growing them as this happens most years now :(

Lovely piece of moss. Yes it does stand out.
It does not matter how small, this is the start. From tiny acorns the mighty oak doeth grow. :)

There is no end to this awful period of dry weather we are having. I truly do not know how you cope with it every Summer Lisa.

    Wishing you more rain

    1. I hate to say this out loud but I haven't seen any Lily Beetles in my garden. I wouldn't try to grow them either if the beetle was in my area. I hope to never seen them.
We have always had a drought period during August but it seems now days it is all the time. Extremes are becoming the norm. I wonder if our weather will be more like Texas in the coming years or worse. Scary. This is one reason why my plant palette is not as wide as my thoughts would take it.

    1. This is the hydrangea that You and Stewart bought for me when you were here last. I will never forget this generous gesture. I always think of you when I look at it.

  12. Love your moss garden. Was it difficult to establish? We also had a spot of rain that helped but we really need a good soaker.

    1. The moss accumulates here by itself which is why I (?) chose this area to make a moss garden. We need rain too. Less than an inch so far this month.

  15. Hope you have gotten even more rain since then; I can only be envious.

Phones are just plain annoying! Gardens are much more fun. But we all know that, right

  16. Congrats on the start of your moss garden! It will be beautiful! I am still trying to recover from last year's upgrade of the operating system of my Apple computer. I was perfectly happy with my old OS, but my son and others insisted the old OS was hopelessly outdated. Changing over became a nightmare, which the good guys at the Apple Store, after working for hours on my computer, somewhat resolved. But my old photoshop program did not work with the new system, and that meant a new expensive upgrade of that, which led to more complications involving nefarious scoundrels of the underworld who were trying to run a scam, which led to days of angst, and I am not happy with all the new systems, which don't work as well together as the old ones! But I have somewhat adjusted...

  17. Hi Lisa. Your lilies are beautiful and the hydrangea are so pretty too. I love your idea of a moss garden and the rain will certainly help it get underway! Good luck with the computer. There is always a learning curve with new things, but I am sure you will be a pro in no time!

  18. Lucky you. Rain, what is that? I have not seen it in two months. I try to be calm and instead of gardening I go to the beach! About your phone, this iis my approach, look very old and blond, cheer for the nerds in the Apple store . Tell them how clever they are, how desperate you feel etc. Note, this only helps with men, not the women in the store. Succes and groetjes Hetty

  22. Lisa, your flowers look very fresh after the rain. Here we have a bit of rains, so plant need watering very often. Love your Strawberry Vanilla Hydrangea, it's pretty. Mine is in buds yet. Yes, the moss on the lawn is a problem, Lisa. I spray it with sulfate of iron, works perfectly.

  24. Wow, your moss patch is very impressive! We have moss growing in the back and I love it! It's so much easier than grass, which has to be mowed, etc. I think your garden looks very happy. Have you had more rain more recently? We are in a bit of a dry period, so I hope we'll get a good drenching soon--especially with the heat in the 10-day forecast!

  26. That lily is absolutely gorgeous. The rain looks pretty on your day lilies too. I still have a few blooms--not many. I love it when they are ALL in full bloom. There is just a riot of color and shape--so pretty. I REALLY need to separate them--don't know what I'm going to do with all of them.
