Miscellaneous March Thoughts

This time of year I am usually able to get outside and do a few clean up jobs. Messing and gomming in the garden.  Making plans and moving things around. Watching the crocus and daffodils blooming. Even February usually offers a few days of yard work, but not this year. All I have managed is picking up sticks between storms.
Despite the sunshine that has graced our area today the cold and snow is keeping me indoors. I am having some thoughts about rearranging some of the furniture outside. I have already moved everything inside that I could possibly move.
My latest birthday bench sits out by the barn now. I  would like to see more often. I am thinking about moving it to a more prominent place.
When I look out the patio doors, especially during winter there isn't a whole lot to see. I thought it would be nice to see an inviting bench to draw you out into the garden.
Of course this situation would mean I would have to increase the width of this planting bed to incorporate the bench.
Which would mean I would have to purchase some more plants to make the bench feel at home here.
Yes, I think this is a plan. I will let the bench sit here for awhile to see if I feel good about this.
When the snow melts I will go sit here and think about it.
Do you ever try out seating in different parts of your garden before you settle on a placing?
On this warmer but overcast day when I was moving things about the Snowdrops opened despite no sun. I was so happy to see them.
The Pussy Willow is beginning to strut it's fur.
At the feeders there is some finch movement. More House Finches have been turning up and one of them was leucistic. I had never seen one before. It was here only one day. I wonder where it went.
On a more sunny day we saw the resident chipmunk at the feeders. It was only here one day too.
I wonder if it went into hibernation? Do they hibernate? Sure haven't seen this little guy all winter.
I wonder how many are in our garden. It is hard to tell because they aren't the most gregarious little critters. Maybe the Cooper's Hawk that haunts the garden keeps them in check.
I hope the weather gods become more generous with the warmer weather soon. Until then everyone stay warm and have plenty of  garden thoughts.

  1. Lisa - I think you just need more plants for the garden bench - I recommend it highly :)! If you are like me you are always looking for an excuse to add something new to the garden. As for your resident chipmunk I have a couple running amok in my garage. I don't know if they hibernate completely but they do seek a warm place to sleep. Love seeing your finches. I don't have any yet at my feeders. Take care and have a delightful day. Thanks too for stopping by to visit me. Hugs!

    1. I love any opportunity to purchase more plants. Even if the bench doesn't stay there I will have to buy more plants. :)

  2. Chipmunks are so much cuter than squirrels (even if they do engage in the same kind of pilfering). Although the temperatures and snow might suggest otherwise, I see signs of spring in your photos. It's coming! I pretty much never move my garden furniture but then that may be because I almost never use any of it. Perhaps I should sit awhile and contemplate its placement too.

    1. You are probably one of those people that don't move things inside either. I move things inside and out. I get restless from time to time. It drives my Dearly Beloved crazy when I do this inside.

  3. I think we're all getting restless during this cold spell of weather. I was thinking everything needs to change and I also need some better seating. Plus of course new plants, you can't go wrong with new plants in my opinion!

  4. We've been able to do quite a bit of clean up and our yard waste bins and collapsible bins are all full. We hope to start cutting back sword ferns soon, but it is still so cold.

  5. I love that you do that and make sure it "fits." I've told my husband before that I put something a certain place and wait for it to tell me if it likes it there or not 😊 Also, I just got a couple garden books from the library so I can ogle over sunny pictures and full blooms while it snows.

    1. I often get a wild hair to move something then I am not too happy with the results. I will have to mull this one over.

  8. We try out benches, pots, lanterns, any large item gets moved around before we settle on a place. If it is too big to move easily, we make a cardboard cut out or do something to make a mockup to help us decide. You could leave your birthday bench where you just put it and just curve the sections to either side so they come out a bit and envelope the bench if you don't want to enlarge it too much. But I think the idea of more plants is calling to you!

  10. I’m with you on hoping for warmer weather soon. I think everybody is. My sister lives in Memphis and loves to work out in her yard and garden. She told me today it is cold there too and still wet from their last rains, and they are expecting more rain. I know she is getting anxious to get outside..

  14. It's a pleasure to see your garden without snow ready to new sprouts, Lisa. I think how much we gardeners have to do in spring to tidy up our gardens: beds, trees, compost. Lovely garden bench!

Oh, nooo! Plant shopping! The horror! The horror! ;^)

I read that working on every view out every of window of the home makes for a better home so I've been trying to do that. A bench as a focal point is a great idea. Hope you'll get some warm weather soon so you can be outside again.
