Springing Up

I just love this time of year. Plants and flowers are springing up daily. The weather has been so nice I can't hardly stand to be inside. I have walked down this same path daily for awhile. I know I did this morning but this afternoon I saw this....
A dwarf larkspur Delphinium tricorne. This sweet plant is one I rescued from the side of the road last spring when the road crews were working on the apron of a road we travel a lot. It was sitting atop some soil they had graded off to the side of the road. I figured it wouldn't last long there so I took it home. It has rewarded me with this bloom and I believe there is another plant beside the original.
The Prairie trillium recurvatum is also finally open. It seems to like this warmer weather we are having.
The Mayapples, Podophyllum peltatum,  are all popped up. Some have buds on them. It won't be long and they will be blooming. None too soon for the big ole bumble bees that have been trundling through the garden lately.
The always faithful native Columbine are opening too. This means to me that the hummingbirds should be returning at any moment.
This has been the best year for the Iris cristata 'powder blue giant' in my garden. I don't know why that is but I am pleased to see them blooming so nice.
Do you have any surprises in your garden this spring?

  1. Spring IS the most magical of seasons! I've had the same experience in which I stop dead in my tracks to note a bloom where I'd swear there hadn't even been a bud the day before. Probably because of all the rain we got this winter (relative to most years), walking through the garden has revealed one surprise after another. The first Agapanthus buds began popping up late last week - and it hasn't even been really warm yet.

  2. It's always fun to see what's popping up in other parts of the country. Looks like we are just about in the same place, spring wise.

    1. Yes Linda, it seems that your garden starts a little sooner but mine catches up fast. It has been quite warm here.

    1. Violets are rampant in my lawn. So much so I wrote a couple of haiku about them:
      In the morning light
      Seemingly purple fog lies
      Sweetly on the lawn

      Fragrance delicate,
      Drifting on gentle breezes
      The color purple

  4. The Trillium is my favorite. What interesting leaves. Nice to see plants from moist woodlands.

  6. Wow LIsa - your garden is certainly coming alive. Love your dwarf delphinium. I have planted several types over the years in my garden but they don't return for more than a year at a time. Have went to Larkspur (seed is easy to just cast and they are an annual but come up for me every year) for similar blooms. Well enjoy your garden...our may apples are up as well...morels should be up too. Hope to find these rare morsels. Some folks believe you find them under may apples. I have yet to discover them there but may be this year :)! Hugs

  11. I love your Crested Iris. You're well ahead of us - no Columbine blooms yet, which is just as well with the snow we are expecting.

  12. Your Columbine is pretty one Lisa. A Prairie trillium looks nice.
My garden is awakened too, blooming flowers are on the beds.
