Eclipse of the Full Snow Moon

Last night was such an exciting night with the Eclipse of the Full Snow Moon. Sherry at Q's Corner is an avid watcher of the moon. She keeps me aware of some of the lore of the moon which is how I knew this moon phase had a name. It seems very apt this year. Even here where we don't get as much snow as a lot of places. We woke to a skiff of snow yesterday.

I also want to add that Nan at Letters from a Hill Farm has another way to look at the moon. Her astrological gaze will give you another view. As our house is situated on an odd (to me) angle. We couldn't see the moon unless we went outside. So my dearly beloved went out and I set-up our spotting scope, he set his camera onto a tripod and we moon watched for some time.
We cheated a bit by leaving our equipment outside to run inside to warm up. Dashing out to look and take pictures every few minutes.
I was just amazed at all the color that was reflected by the moon when it was almost covered. My little point and shoot didn't gather all that color but I did so enjoy seeing it. Can't you just imagine how the ancients felt when they saw their precious moon disappear into the night. Wondering or hoping that Orion would pull the moon back into sight before it disappeared forever??
It was so cold that even Luna didn't want to be out in the garden staring at her namesake. She was trying to lead her lunatic pack the way in to the warmth.
We were all so cold we couldn't wait to dive in bed to get warm. We couldn't stay out to watch the moon emerge again. Brrrrrrr I know some brave souls got some fantastic pictures to show of this. So I'm gonna surf around to see it while sitting here drinking a hot cup of tea in front of the fire. Aaaaahhhhh this is more like it.

  4. Dear Lisa,
Nice sequence! It was very beautiful. Your husband did great! Easy to over expose.
It was cold here too! Right after total the clouds blew in and covered the moon right up. I too thought about the ancients. How scary for them. Thank you for the link. I shall go visit.

  5. Lisa, that was fun. I didn't even notice the moon last night, and I didn't know it was the Full Snow Moon. One of the things I like most about blogs is the education I'm getting.~~Dee

  6. Too bad you couldn't see it Jayne. It was great. The wind picked up here as the moon was covered. Brrr

Thank you Jar, it was gorgeous.

Yes, we couldn't wait to jump in the sack after seeing it covered. I wish I could have seen it emerge. I will just have to look for pictures.

Thank you Sherry. These were my pictures. DB's are better but I couldn't or didn't want to wait for him to process his. You are most welcome for the link.

Oh Dee you will have to wait until 2010 to see this again. Be sure to put it on your calendar so you won't miss it next time. We had to set the timer to remind us to go out. Ha...

  7. You and db get extra points for setting up in the cold. Luna is right, get back inside to the warmth. That fire looks so inviting.

  8. Congrats to your dearly beloved for getting such awesome photos!

We had chilly night too (14 degrees!) but it was worth it--I loved watching the stars POP when the moon went dark...and yes...the experience was primal!

We call this full moon the Hunger Moon...

  9. Lisa, wonderful pics. I wasn't as brave as you and took a few pics from the back door! Mine didn't turn out nearlly as good as yours though. But, I was still glad I made the effort. You and DB went the extra mile!

  10. We had an absolutely clear night too. Couldn't stay awake to see the full moon covered in shadow, but watched avery half hour at the progress of the shadow. It was better than anything on TV.

  14. Febulous photos Lisa! It was a beautiful sight, but I only got out of my sickbed (grrrrr!) for a short time to take a look. We are fortunate here to have such beaufiful dark skies.

  15. Oh, well done, Lisa! I hadn't read this when I posted my latest, so I'll go edit it and include a link to this post. It was cold here too--and moreso today--so I didn't go outside, just observed it from the window occasionally.

  19. Thanks for the moon pictures. We had spotty overcast and when the moon was visible, we often couldn't tell if it was the eclipse or the clouds that covered it.
Thanks for braving the cold to take and then share your view with us.

  21. What wonderful photos Lisa!! I'm so glad you and your hubby braved the cold to record the event. I meant to but completely forgot until it was too late. I wish I'd thought to set the timer! Now I don't feel I completely missed out, thanks to you.
Lunar had the right idea :)

  22. Yes Kim the fire is on tv. We don't have a proper fireplace. A friend took pity on us and gave us a DVD with this fireplace with a roaring fire. It really is a nice alternative. We can crank up the sound and hear the snapping and crackling and when it just about dies down the invisible butler stokes the fire. No mess. I swear we feel warmer just seeing the fire glow. :)

  23. Great pictures Lisa! Is not that cold weather in Puerto Rico yesterday. It was just like 70 at midnight. I need a little camera to fit in my scope too. We have the same view of the eclipse.

  40. What a great series of photographs, Lisa - I'm so jealous. We kept popping out, hoping for a break in the clouds, but never got to see much of the eclipse. Thanks so much for sharing!

  41. Fantastic! You got some great shots, and I love that you were out there with your aptly named dog to watch the eclipse. As Annie mentioned, we were socked in with clouds and missed the show. I went out the next night to take a picture or two, but nothing like this.
