More Ice Pictures

Well my friends while I was sitting in my garden whining about a little ice on things my Sister who live 60miles south of where I do was really hit with ice about a week ago. We went to her place to visit family and friends today and I must say I was impressed with their ice. I have never seen the aftermath of such an ice storm. As you can see it was melting off the ground ok but look at those trees. This is ice people. Her garden is in 5a. Couldn't tell that by looking at these pictures.
I must add an edit here. As Carol pointed out my Sister is in 6A not 5...typo... How would you like your crocus to be encased by ice like this? I hope they come out for her after the thaw.

It was just unbelieveable the ice packed on the tree brances. Any branch that had a weakness did come down. Talk about a major pick up sticks project.
This is heather that was about to be gorgeous and look at it. Frozen.
Some Hawthorn or crab apples encased in ice.
I just know it will be a few days before the laundry will be hung out.

  2. Gorgeous pictures. I need some hot chocolate in order to warm up after looking at those though!

  3. lisa - i love that first picture! it's beautiful! I know we are not suppose to like ice storms but they sure are pretty.

  4. Brrrrrrrrrrrr. It is beautiful, though, in spite of all the damage it can do.

  5. Wow, that's amazing. I hope there wasn't too much damage!

  6. That is a lot of ice. I especially liked the crocus picture. I've been taking lots of pictures of crocuses lately.

South of you, and still 5a? I would have thought 6a.

  7. I love to see that kind of pictures because we'll never going to see something like that here. Great pictures!!

  8. I love the shots with the ice. I am hoping I will get another opportunity to take some similar photos yet this winter. I am just starting to take some basic pictures of nature in Iowa. I have posted several pictures from a recent trip to a botanical center nearby. I would love to hear any comments or suggestions you could provide.

  9. lisa, not that I would like to see it in my garden, but those are really beautiful pictures. Will the plants survive that?

  10. Good to see you got home safely Beckie.

Hot chocolate would be good Sherry.

Gina, you are right it is pretty. I felt like I was in a winter wonderland.

Not much major damage to thier garden. One huge limb down that they have to have someone take out but it was in the back and didn't land on anything of consequence.

You are right Carol. I just made a typo. She is in 6a.

    Thank you Gabriel.

Travis, I will have a look at your site. I am sure you are doing fine. I am a point and shoot photographer so I don't know how much help I would be.

Gintionio, I think all will survive. It should all melt away today. It sounded eerie with all the ice falling as it melted.

  11. Brrrrrr..... now THAT'S ice. Oh, I do hate that her crocus and heather is all encased and hope it somehow survives this. Beautiful, but sad to me.

  12. It is amazing and rather scary when this weather strikes .. I think we will always be a little cautious after the ice storm of '98
    GREAT pictures though !

  13. I love your ice pictures, but as you can imagine, up here in Maine, we have more than enough of the white stuff, so we prefer greener pictures. About this time of year, we've had enough, but when August and September roll around, we feel sorry for our southern family members sweltering in the heat and humidity.

  14. These icy pictures are just amazing Lisa.

  15. You really have amazinh photos here. But after getting that much ice and snow, I'm going inside for a nice cup of tea!

  16. Aha, the Ice Queen was paying your sister a visit as well. The flowers encased in ice look gorgeous!

Don't worry about damage, over here commercial fruit growers spray the blossom on their fruit trees when frost is forecast. They've found that the ice actually protects the frail blossom from the cold fingers of frost. Strange but true.

  17. Wow. We had ice storms like that in Maryland. The winter of 90-91 was the worst. But I never saw anything so beautiful when the sun finally broke through the clouds... lost lots of trees that year.

Your photos are stunning. I hope she has a big melt soon.

  18. The ice looks beautiful, but having lived through a bad ice storm, I think power outages, trees splitting in the middle and no telephone / internet.

Your sister was really hit with the ice - it was amazing to see the contrasts with your garden from Saturday's post.

Your gazing balls look cool covered in ice. Luna looks beautiful against the snow!

  19. Those are gorgeous pictures. I love the way plants look coated in ice. I like it best when it's on other peoples plants!

Hopefully there wasn't too much destruction for your sister.

  20. Looks like in a fairy tale, when the Ice Queen has been furious!
Beautiful and scary at the same time.

  21. Beautiful and so destructive! Love your previous posts on the moon, Luna with the wild eyes and the cozy fire! I think you sent that ice my way along with another bit of snow! Please make it stop!

  22. I'd rather deal with snow than ice anyday! It is strikingly beautiful though.

  23. That is one serious ice storm. We never see anything like that here, tks so much for sharing.

  24. Your ice photos are amazing. I do believe Mother Nature is the master artist. She certainly loves your camera!

Thanks for your kind words about my poem. God bless.

  25. Nice photos, Lisa! We had our ice storm last January and everyone in Austin was out there with a camera...they're so beautiful but there's always so much clean-up! Mother Nature wields some big pruning shears.

  26. Fabulous photos! Though I have had quite enough of snow and ice for the year. :-) I can see only one tiny patch of snow near the mountain top now, and that makes me smile.

  27. So lovely...the heath will probably be fine, the crocus might be a bit mushy depending on how open they were when the ice hit--it's a pity that ice is so beautiful yet can be so damaging, isn't it?

  28. Now thats what I call a frost, I have to say Lisa I have never seen anything like this, and as cold as it might be there it makes for some beautiful photos. Thanks for comment on the goldfinch, maybe I should post some of my sketches to see what you think. Mike.

  32. I like this description that several of you have given "Ice Queen" had definitely struck.

Thank you for all your kind comments about my pictures. I was rather obcessed with it all. I could have posted more. :)

Mike, I think you should definitely post some of your sketches. I might get brave and do the same. Maybe not.

Sorry Giddy, I will try to get back to more lively things when they start popping up.

  33. Dear Lisa,
So glad you are safe! I heard about your ice storm. I know ice storms. We have had many in K.C. always beautiful and so scary! I have lots many trees due to ice storms.
Very pretty pictures. Just stay safe! No falling.

  35. Lisa,
I just read your wonderful comment on my graffiti blog. If you ever get a chance to photograph that "problem" wall, would you send it along? I'd love to include it and credit you. These creative, artistic conversations are very exciting.

Thanks for taking the time to share that.

  38. BEAUTIFUL pictures!
Brings me some coolness for this hot weather! (Lima, Peru, 35°C in the shade, 30°C at night!)
Thanks for sharing such great experiences, seem like simple things but make the soul smile :)

  39. Wonderful photos Lisa! Ice makes for beautiful pics, but it can be really wicked! We've had way too much of it this winter. Give me snow over ice any day.
I hope there wasn't too much damage to your sister's yard and garden.
