How would you like your crocus to be encased by ice like this? I hope they come out for her after the thaw.
It was just unbelieveable the ice packed on the tree brances. Any branch that had a weakness did come down. Talk about a major pick up sticks project.
This is heather that was about to be gorgeous and look at it. Frozen.
Some Hawthorn or crab apples encased in ice.
I just know it will be a few days before the laundry will be hung out.
Great pictures! Wasn't it fun!! We still have some snow, but the sun was out here today and I missed it!

ReplyDeleteI love the shots with the ice. I am hoping I will get another opportunity to take some similar photos yet this winter. I am just starting to take some basic pictures of nature in Iowa. I have posted several pictures from a recent trip to a botanical center nearby. I would love to hear any comments or suggestions you could provide.

Gina, you are right it is pretty. I felt like I was in a winter wonderland.
Not much major damage to thier garden. One huge limb down that they have to have someone take out but it was in the back and didn't land on anything of consequence.

Gintionio, I think all will survive. It should all melt away today. It sounded eerie with all the ice falling as it melted.
Brrrrrr..... now THAT'S ice. Oh, I do hate that her crocus and heather is all encased and hope it somehow survives this. Beautiful, but sad to me.

I love your ice pictures, but as you can imagine, up here in Maine, we have more than enough of the white stuff, so we prefer greener pictures. About this time of year, we've had enough, but when August and September roll around, we feel sorry for our southern family members sweltering in the heat and humidity.

ReplyDeleteDon't worry about damage, over here commercial fruit growers spray the blossom on their fruit trees when frost is forecast. They've found that the ice actually protects the frail blossom from the cold fingers of frost. Strange but true.
Wow. We had ice storms like that in Maryland. The winter of 90-91 was the worst. But I never saw anything so beautiful when the sun finally broke through the clouds... lost lots of trees that year.

The ice looks beautiful, but having lived through a bad ice storm, I think power outages, trees splitting in the middle and no telephone / internet.

Nice photos, Lisa! We had our ice storm last January and everyone in Austin was out there with a camera...they're so beautiful but there's always so much clean-up! Mother Nature wields some big pruning shears.

Fabulous photos! Though I have had quite enough of snow and ice for the year. :-) I can see only one tiny patch of snow near the mountain top now, and that makes me smile.
ReplyDeleteSo lovely...the heath will probably be fine, the crocus might be a bit mushy depending on how open they were when the ice hit--it's a pity that ice is so beautiful yet can be so damaging, isn't it?
