Where did those birds go??

OMG...DB yelled at me to come look out the window. There was an adult Cooper's Hawk sitting on a limb in our back yard. No wonder the birds all departed. I took one photo through the patio doors. Yes, the neighbors are having new siding put on their house...
I asked DB to get his camera and take a picture. It turned around on the limb. It was looking all around. It just knew dinner was here some place.
Looking around some more. Just look at the beautiful slate colored back and its dark cap. OO oo was there movement down there? Come here little birdie. I won't hurt you...
I said come here. Don't hide in that hydrangea. I can see you sneaking out the other side.
The Cooper's walked several feet around the bushes. Poking its head in every once in awhile. The poor thing departed with empty talons. Too bad. We have plenty of House Sparrows to spare.

  2. fabulous images, very like our Sparrow Hawks who love a meal of garden birds too. I have never seen one settle, just a flurry of wings and fallen feathers as it snatches a meal.

  4. Wow, great shots of the Cooper Hawk. I love birds of prey. Had a buzzard in my garden once and a little falcon in my old garden.

  6. Sparrows to spare!!! Poor little things. I am glad the predator went away empty taloned this time. I would much rather see the stray mouse get caught. Fabulous photos, what kind of camera does he use?

  9. I enjoyed looking at your photos. I found your blog by looking at comments on Mr. McGregor's Daughter's blog. I've seen your name on other blogs, too, I think. I'll bookmark you and check on you again!

We have a couple hawks, I can't remember what kind, that live on the grounds of the school where I work. We see them flying around or perched in a tree when we venture out their way.

  12. So exciting, and you got such great photos too! I saw hawk of some type in our yard this summer but by the time I found my camera it was long gone :(

  13. Great photos taken by you and your DB. Often I notice the absence of birds at the feeder before I notice the presence of a hawk.

  14. Lisa, how exciting! Great pictures from both of you. I can't believe he satyed so long and posed so well. maybe he will be back to dine on some of those sparrows. But isn't it amazing how the birds did all disappear?

  15. They are just the coolest birds, aren't they? I had a Red-shouldered in my yard yesterday and will post him later this week. I love seeing them around.

  16. Cheryl, yes it is exciting to have a hawk of any sort in ones garden.

Zoe, we were lucky to see this one in action. It is sad that they miss more than they try for while hunting.

    IF, you are welcome.

Frances, you aren't the first one that has asked what kind of camera my DB uses. I am not sure. I am trying to get him to write a guest post about his camera.

    Sue Welcome to Greenbow.

Beckie, it is amazing how the birds disappear when the Coop comes in or is even in the neighborhood. I don't blame them.

Yes Jayne, the coolest. I will look forward to your post.

Thank you all for stopping by and leaving me a comment about the Cooper's. It is thrilling to have on in the garden and much fun to share with you all.

  18. Lisa, such amazing photos! You've captured his thoughts as well:) I wish sometimes you were sitting on my porch with me to identify some of my birds; I've seen some different ones lately, and I wish I knew what they are!

I see your new bird feeder is getting some customers. I've put a feeder on my "Christmas list," but I may not wait till then.

  19. On our walk yesterday, Coopers Hawk was being taken on by a very angry crow :-) Our Sparrow population has decreased dramatically because of him!

  20. Much as I love birds, I can't feel all warm and fuzzy about hawks or eagles. I have a red tail hanging around and eating my little birds. Wish he would go find some squirrels.

  21. Wow! I'm surprised you were able to get all those pictures with out scaring it off. I'm never that lucky. Our hawk is a fraidy cat.- Randy

  22. He is a beauty, and ever so relaxed in your presence. We have a red shoulder hawk that hangs out at our house, and we often see him pounce on small snakes and rodents.

  23. Lisa,

Just wanted to thank you for help in finally getting a replacement feeder for my sweet birds...it isn't the same one but I am quite happy and so are the birds. Thanks,

  24. How cool! We get Hawk visits occasionally (I think ours are Red-tailed) but I never got shots anywhere near as good as yours. Looks like it was searching for all the little birdies that normally hang out in your garden.

  25. How exciting to have a Cooper's Hawk!! Wow! I just love this hawk best of all, and I have yet to see one here. I know they are, I just haven't seen them! Beautiful photos!!

  26. Dear Lisa,
I do not know how I missed your Cooper's Hawk visit but I did somehow. They are awesome birds! I love watching them and the Sharp Shinned hunt the backyard. I almpleased to see them as my Dove population and the House Sparrows can become way too large.
Nice to know the hawks are keeping the balance.
    Great photographs!
