Skywatch Friday

I am beginning to think our skies are permanently gray. It is interesting to go out and see skeins of geese passing over our house on their way from the lake not far from us to the out lying fields. I like to look through them to see if I can spot something different flying along with them. Like a Cackling or White-fronted, Snow or even Ross's Goose would be nice.
Nope nobody different here.
If you would like to see more sky pictures you can go here for Skywatch Friday participants.

  3. Lisa I never tire of standing still and listening to the geese in flight..it is interesting to watch how they all fly in that constant V formation always in sync.

  6. Our skies are gray too, and snow is falling. Your idea of snuggling under a blanket with a books is so appealing.

  7. Lisa,

Gray is another winter color we have lots of...those days are good for reading and sometimes the greens look spectacular...

I love the geese formations and now I am going to look and see if other birds might be flying with them...I think they are heading for water near here. Where do they winter Lisa?

  8. Gail, a lot of the Geese here are wintering here. There are several hundreds of Canada Geese here during winter. Some are wearing the tags or collars that were put on them when they were juveniles by biologists while they were on their breeding grounds up in Canada. It is fun to try to see those tags, send in the information to see where they were tagged. This information tells the biologists where they migrate to during winter and they can see if the bird is still alive etc. Then you can see where it was tagged, how old, what sex etc.

Most of the goose collars I have sent in were collared in Ontario, Canada.

With the Canadas, I sometimes see Mallards or other geese as I said.

I imagine some geese go way south. Like to Texas etc.

  11. Would you like to have some rays of sunshine and a bit of blue sky? We've got it, but it is still very, very cold. I never saw geese flying here.

  12. I love to watch and listen to the geese flying over.
Hope you get some sunny skies soon.

  13. This is the third post I've read this afternoon about gray skies, Lisa--I think we're all ready for some sunny days! Actually, the sun was out today, and the temperature got up to 40. But it was only a tease: freezing rain or snow is predicted tonight, and an "arctic blast" next week. Hmm, I see one of the airlines is advertising flights to Florida for $59:)

  14. I can send you some snow, Lisa, if that would be some help in relieving the colour tedium? Really, no bother at all; be glad to share it with others. Heh.

  15. We've had that color today, along with snow here in Nebraska. We have a pond in our cemetery we live close to, that some geese must live in or near. We see them flying overhead once in awhile. I hope to get picks of them some time.

    Great Skywatch pics!

  16. That is one of the beauties of winter days - watching the geese flying overhead in their constant v's. You've really captured that in your pictures!

  17. At least you don't have to worry about lens flares. (A pathetic attempt to look for a positive side to gray skies.)

It would be interesting to know why geese choose a particular area to stop migrating and overwinter. Many enjoy the comforts of wetlands with adjoining rice field in the south.

I wonder if geese up your direction move farther south if your winter turns especially harsh?

  20. Hi Lisa, skeins of geese, what a wonderful phrase! I loved the reflection of you in the gold ball too, and always love seeing the sweet Luna. I have noticed that some of the bulbs poke up on a warm day then disappear when it turns cold again! How do they do that? But it is wise of them to do so. Kind of like us going outside then back in the the warmth of book and blankie!

  21. I was just thinking this same thought yesterday as I drove through the gray and gloom. It's that time of year when it feels as if the sun will never come back...
