Garden Bloggers Bloom Day - 8-15-09

Here in the heat of the summer most of the big color flowers are finished. I have some annuals that are thriving in the heat. Lantana is blooming its head off finally. It has pouted through the wet cool part of the summer. The Turtle Heads are blooming nice as is the Joe Pye Weed and Butterfly weed. Notice that weed word working its way through this line.
I have two new Toad Lilies that are blooming up a storm. One is Tricyrtis hirta 'Arctic"...

The other is 'Empress'. I love the cool blue of the Arctic and the royal purple color of 'Empress.
The Autumn Clematis is beginning to bloom like a spray of firworks.
The 'Unique' hydrangea is blooming nice through this heat. It always makes me feel cool to see those white blooms in the deep shade. Niko Blue still has some big mop heads of blue going.
There are plenty of the old fashioned Plantain Lily blooming. The big white blooms attract the bees and hummingbirds. French honeysuckle is blooming nicely too. Of course the Susans continue to bloom and tall garden Phlox perfumes the hot air.

    Lovely Bloom Day offerings, Lisa! That lantana is so bright and cheerful, and the whites are crisp and cool-looking. I really do envy you being able to grow tricyrtis so beautifully.

    Hi Lisa! That Empress toad lily is a stunner. I have a bunch of toad lilies but she's new to me. The only one that's blooming for me at the moment is Tojen.

    Aw, man, Lisa -- I am so totally jealous of your amazing Toad Lilies. They are so beautiful -- both colors are so unique. Mine have now totally shriveled down into 1 leaf sticking out of the mulch. Where are you growing them and do they get much sun/water? Mine are in full shade and I try to water them by hand mostly daily. I had others in sun and they died right away. Keep showing yours so I get some more eye candy.

    It's been so hot here that it seems only the Crepe Myrtle is thriving lately. Love those pretty lilies!

    Sitting in your shade garden looks like a great way to stay cool, Lisa. I didn't realize toad lilies bloomed at this time of year--they're beautiful!

    Ooh, a little sneak preview; I'm so excited. I just adore toad lilies and I love the autumn clematis, too (neither of which I have--WHY?!). It's been mostly DRY here, though.

    Dear Lisa,
    You have a nice mix of cultivated and wild blooming. Rain today so I do not know if I will get out to hunt bugs or not!
    I guess I could hunt spiders in the basement!

    It seems unfair that so many of the beautiful native plants that bloom in summer get saddled with the moniker "weed." Lucky for Chelone to avoid that fate. It's such a great color. I'm drooling over your new Tricyrtis 'Artic.' I've never seen that one.

    I love your toad lilies! I have not been successful with them. Yours are beauties. Turtle head is a beauty too... where do these names come from? I suppose it does look a bit like a turtle head... I used to have that plant too... you inspire me to try both again.

    Hi Lisa.....it is just surprising how many flowers do survive the hot and dry conditions.

    I love lantana.....it is one of my favourite annuals....

    Love the clematis.....beautiful, would fit in well with my white theme!!

    My hydrangea's have not done at all well this year. I think the dry weather has not suited them....blooms are few.....

    Lisa, gorgeous August blooms. Especially the toad lilies. I have not tried to grow these, but after seeing yours...

    Your hydrangea is just what Pam says-fresh looking in the heat of late summer. I love the look of the pale yellow lantana with the varigated leaves of the hostas.
    Rose and I have Sweet Autumn clematis on our lists for this fall. The garden center is supposed to be raising several for sale soon. Can't wait to have blooms like yours.

    Lisa, I'm adding myself as another tricyrtis 'Arctic' fan. I'd not seen that... the closest I have is 'Blue Wonder.' Some of my T's are beginning to bloom. Oh! I hope my new camera is easy to use.

    I could have almost visualized (and smelled) your flowers through your narration!

    Your whites are stealing the show, Lisa! The lantanas here also take so long to get revved up, but then will take us into winter with those colorful hues. Your hydrangeas are a delight.

    Toad lilies, Lisa, how cool is that! But I can't believe your Sweet Autumn clematis is blooming already. Though I love them, I call them and the anemones 'summer-killers' because when they bloom that usually means it's almost all over.

    You have some lovely blooms there! I love the toad lilies. I have some blackberry lilies. I'm not sure what the difference is, I'll have to check that out.

    I've probably been at your blog before, but I have lots of trouble keeping up with all the blogs I like. I came here this morning after reading your comment on Heirloom Gardener's blog about living on a busy corner. You said you have created privacy. Our yard isn't that big, so I don't know if I could do that or not. I have to get ready for the day, but want to come back to find photos of your yard to see how you did it.

    I enjoyed your post about the other bloggers coming to visit, too.

    I adore that lantana! Whenever I see the happy yellows and golds, I wonder why I always insist on gravitating toward the multicolored reds instead.

    Those toad lilies are gorgeous! I must add them to my wish list. I have the same yellow lantana blooming in a container. The lacecap hydrangea is glorious! I want one!
