Blue Potatoes

Yes, you read the title right. BLUE potatoes. I went to the Farmers Market today. I saw these blue potatoes. I just had to try them. I had some fresh green beans so I peeled the potatoes and threw them into a pot with the green beans. I don't think I would have had to peel the potatoes because their skins were so thin but I don't really like potato skins so I did peel them.

I also threw in a vidalia onion.
Oh my gosh. They are wonderful tasting. They keep their color when cooked. It was really a tastey potato. It has a different texture. A mildly nutty flavor. I will be going back for more. If you would like something different to grow in your potato patch you should try these.
I hope everyone has a great 4th of July.

  1. Sure are pretty, Lisa. Don't know if I could get used to them but I'm sure they're just as tasty.

  7. Hi Carolyn, good to see you. These potatoes are a weird color but tasty.

Vasanthalathika, that brown rod is a Bratwurst Sausage that has been grilled over charcoal.

    Hi Cicero and Monica.

Cheryl, I don't know the vairety. The young man that was selling them didn't have much to say about them. There was a sign that said Blue Potatoes. That is all I know except that they were yummy.

  8. I've never seen blue potatoes before, Lisa! They do look a little strange when cooked, but I'll eat any kind of potato--must be the German in me:) We've had a couple meals with green beans from my garden, though--delicious!

    Happy Independence Day!

  9. I've seen blue potatoes before, but for some reason have never bought any. I'm glad that you taste-tested them for all of us! So they're nutty-tasting... but not sweet at all?

By the way, they would be perfect for a Fourth of July potato salad, no? Mixed in with some white potatoes, maybe roasted red pepper... yum!

  10. Well, the blue / purple spud is a little strange, but the whole assembled meal does look delicious. Hope you enjoyed it thoroughly!

  11. These are the potatoes of my childhood--my grandfather DeLong always planted them (they're called Tancook Island Blues up here, the variety being popular on an island off the south shore of the province) and there is nothing like them for flavour. A bit odd looking, true, but as you discovered they're yummy. Thanks for the flashback, and Happy Fourth to you!

  12. There are so many wonderful potatoes that rarely make their way to the grocery stores. We don't grow potatoes, though we have in the past and it was always a treat to plant ones we'd never eaten before. I've never met a potato I didn't like! This is the company we used to buy from:

  14. Yes, these potatoes are as tasty as the "normal" coloured ones, but the eyes have to get used to this "strange" look in the plate :-) !!

  16. Oh my, those are so cool-looking, Lisa! And your description of their flavor makes me want to find some. Wonder if I can get them down here. I'll have to make a Farmer's Market run soon to look. Are you going to Buffa10 this week?

  17. Hi, Lisa;

  19. The color would take some getting used to but I'd like to try them. I'll watch for them locally. They look strange mashed up on the plate:)

  21. Well how strange they look! I've never seen such a thing. We did grow some black beans but when you cooked them, all the colour came out! Useless. Portmeirion plates?

  22. This is so fun! I love meshed potato but I have not encounter a purple one yet.

The arrangement and colours match so well here. I took some steam potato this morning, wish that I can get one here...He..He..
