I am happy to note a new clematis I planted this summer is blooming despite the heat and droughty conditions. It is Viticella Venosa Violacea. The flowers aren't as big as they will be when it gets established but I like that it seems to be a tough clematis and will take hold where I want it to grow up one of the arches.
The datura is blooming at night now. It seems that many things are drying up sooner than they normally would have. They have been blooming for some time now.
The Susan's never fail to bloom. They appear a little ahead of schedule this year. I still have some bubble gum pink mondara blooming. After seeing the posts
of monarda with those big lilies coming up through them I know what I am going to plant where as soon as I can get a hold of some of those lilies.

Other plants blooming here are: Tall garden phlox, Cranesbill, hosta, gooseneck loosestrife, annuals.

Love that mass planting of Susans, Lisa! I agree all those Buffalo photos of monarda and lilies are inspiring; reminds me of all the purple salvia ala Lurie that we posted last year.

Viticella Venosa Violacea is a mouthful... but a beautiful one! And I love your datura. But it really melts out in the heat for you? Boo. :(
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed that we have some of the same things in bloom. To my regret, I don't have a gorgeous clematis or any monarda. Thanks for sharing yours. I need some inspiration right now.

ReplyDeleteClematis never cease to amaze me. They always seems to struggle through, regardless of weather. The blue is very pretty......a lovely addition to your pretty garden.

I love that datura. It is such an exotic bloom. After the Buffalo trip I am thinking a lot more about clematis. Yours is beautiful.

ReplyDeleteViticella clematis seem to be the easiest to grow, and the most trouble free. I'm definitely going to try some more (I have one, and it's been spectacular). I love the dusty purple blue of yours!

ReplyDeleteKim, the datura only blooms during the late evening, night and early morning. The heat doesn't seem to bother them really.

ReplyDeleteI think I have the same monarda — very pink rather than red. But mine is a baby and also needs more sun, so it is not much of a stand at this point. Our lists are similar but nothing as gorgeous as that clematis or datura.

ReplyDeleteOoh, I do like that clematis. And moon flowers, which I usually plant but somehow didn't this year. They have the funkiest smell, which I can really see why people might not like, but I happen to. P.S. Captcha phrase is slybra, ha ha ha.
ReplyDeleteAlthough my clematis are going dormant in the heat of summer, as MSS said - we do seem to have more plants than usual in bloom in both Indiana & TX -think your heat wave kicked things up, Lisa!
