Here I have found the Toadshade Trillium blooming. I dashed home to see if any trillium was blooming in my garden. Sure enough...
I have a trillium blooming too. While it is similar to the Toadshade it is a different variety. It is Prairie Trillium. How do you tell the difference you ask?? Well the sepals on the Prairie Trillium are on the under side of the leaves. If you look at the Toadshade picture above you can see the sepals on top of the leaves.
If you have a shady spot in your garden either of these trilliums are great to have. They are in the lily family. Such reliable early bloomers once you get them established.

Lisa, I must have this trillium! It's so cool and thank you for the clear explanation of the differences. xogail
ReplyDeleteNo shade here to plant trilliums, but I do love seeing the woodland pictures of great sweeps of them. How springlike!
ReplyDeleteAs Laurrie mentioned, not enough shade to plant these either but man, I love them! Great info too!
ReplyDeleteI have lots of shaded areas. I need to check into these. I love early bloomers.
ReplyDeletelove the carpet of trilliums, I always think they look lovely I tried them once but didn't succeed and as they are not a native where I live have decided to enjoy seeing them virtually in other gardens and wild, Frances
ReplyDeleteAhhh, trillium, one of my favorites. 'Preciate visiting with you, on your lovely walk, Lisa.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting flower. I've never seen a trillium quite like that one. and love the dark red colour too.

Lovely carpet of wildflowers! Your trillium is such a pretty spring bloomer.
ReplyDeleteThey are so lovely, and if you didn't get close you'd never see them would you? I love the Wildflower Wednesday posts. I always learn something new.~~Dee
ReplyDeleteOh I'm so glad to see the red trillium blooming! Everywhere I've been I only see the buds. But aren't the wildflowers great this year?? I'm loving the Virginia Bluebells and the pretty Bellwort best. A truly spectacular show everywhere!
ReplyDeleteNot often one gets to see a woodland wildflower carpet. My Trilliums are up and about to open. You can't have too many Trilliums as far as I'm concerned!
ReplyDeleteThese are lovely indeed.
ReplyDeleteI keep hoping to have a shade garden again. Lost the big Ash and lost the shade.
I too enjoy the wildflowers....

Trillium?! You already have TRILLIUM???!!!!! That's my favorite flower... thank you so much for posting them today.
ReplyDelete(I'm SO taking my camera home with me next weekend. I need to see if they're blooming in the woods behind my parents' house, too.)
Hello again, Lisa! I hope you are well :-D
ReplyDeleteYour trilliums have always inspired me to plant some and last year I picked up a tiny one at a garden nursery after enquiring about them – they weren’t on the sales tables but someone came out from the greenhouse with this young plant – I felt I was being privileged getting it :-D
With other events of last year, I didn’t get round to planting my trillium but placed the pot in a shady spot – I must take a quick look outside to see if it is doing anything… nope nothing yet although it looks like a cuckoo flower might have seeded itself in my pot! Plants…. Huh… just what can you do with them ;-)
I will go out and check to see if the trillium are blooming yet. I have a few in the long border. I don't think they are up yet. Stay tuned.
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa,
ReplyDeleteBeen ages since I checked back here so its nice to have a look through your blog. Nice photos, and an interesting looking flower :)
I love this wild flower and all its varieties. A protected gem!
ReplyDeleteI have the Toadstool variety, but I'm not sure if mine bloomed this year. I haven't seen them. Spring came and went so early, I may have missed them completely.
ReplyDeleteHope your Easter is full of happiness!!!
One of our most beautiful natives. All the parts come in threes.
ReplyDeleteI love the Trillium.
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter Lisa ♥

I planted Dutchman's Breech's a while back and still have not seen any sign of them .. but trillium are wonderful native flowers that I wish I had a "drift" of ! LOL
Great pictures and I read about how you helped "Stripey" have lunch in your garden ! wink wink

I love those trilliums. We have either too much or too little shade for them, I fear.

I just love Trillium, especially in the wild but yours is so lovely. How fun to run home and find it blooming. I have plenty of shade so hmmm, now you've got me thinking about it.
