First Day of Spring - Snow

Can't imagine why she set us outside so early in the year.
Yes, what was she thinking?
I don't know what they are complaining about. I am out here all year long. Woof.
Obviously we had a bit of snow yesterday and last night. Luckily it will be gone by this afternoon.
No surprises here regarding the snow but yesterday morning we did have a surprise.
I know it is a terrible photo but it was so dark outside and the fox was hunting therefore not being still one second. A first for our garden on the first day of spring.
Did you have any firsts on the first day of spring?

  1. Oh, no poor hyacinths! This spring is very capricious Lisa and here too. We had +9 C (40 F) and today was -9 C ( 18 F)
Sure, fox was hungry because of cold day and snow.

    1. Your weather sounds like our weather Nadezda. I hope the fox is lucky next time it comes around and take a few of the rabbits that have been descimating my plants this winter.

  2. Oh, please send that fox to my garden. I went out yesterday to see if there was anything to see. No Hellebores yet, except for one plant close to the house. But two of the species Peonies had buds up almost an inch. Pretty hardy to say the least.

  4. Oh no not more snow. Thankfully ours has melted.
We have had lots of sunshine today and warm temperatures so I have been gardening yippee :)

Oh how wonderful to see a fox. You know they are my favourite wild animal. Great for keeping rabbit numbers down.

Yes I did have a first last week though....Beautiful coal tit.
Never noticed them in the garden before. It was taking insects from one of the pines.

    1. I am hoping the fox is luckier next time around. I hope she feeds all her kits the rabbits out of my garden. The rabbits are thick this year. There is a huge buck rabbit. He is so fat I can't believe he can squeeze through the fence but he does.
Wow a Coal Tit. I bet that was exciting.

  5. Oh boy - is t it funny how our reaction to snow changes between November and March? First day of spring, I did start some seeds (indoors.) Fox are pretty but awful if you have critters. Kinda fun to see though.

  6. Oh yes, I love snow during winter. Even a March snow isn't too bad but we had March weather in February and now are having the cold of February. I got spoiled with the February thaw. I am ready for warmth and sunshine.

  7. Wow, I'm surprised at your snow! We haven't had any in a long time; I think it's all gone east of us. Love all your garden heads. And how exciting to see the fox--we usually have one or even a family here, but I see them mostly in the summer.

    1. Yep, I wasn't so surprised. We usually get a snow around St Patrick's day. I am hoping the fox will keep the rabbit population down...like out.

  8. OMG, snow on the first day of spring? Yikes! Love your garden visitor! Any wildlife that doesn't eat plants is welcome, right?

    1. You bet Peter. I even like rabbits but not when they are eating my plants and they just couldn't help it this winter. Our winter was so severe. I am hoping that the Fox keeps the rabbits in a reasonable amount...as in none.

  9. Yep, it really didn't feel like Spring here either - although we didn't have snow for a change. Loving your captures and wow, first day of Spring with a new wildlife visitor - what a great start! Nope, after all the excitement of our Waxwing visitors everything has gone quiet of new visitors but we did have a noisy garden party last weekend ;-) Wishing you a great weekend!

  10. I'm sorry old man winter hasn't given up yet. The fox sighting is exciting, though! Foxes apparently used to be common in my area too but they were mostly gone well before we moved here 7 years ago. Maybe the coyotes drove them out...

  11. A fox! That's exciting! I enjoyed your head pots and their personalities--they must be cold. ;-) You got quite a bit of snow!

  12. When the fox is done with the rabbits in your garden, could I borrow her?

  13. Dear Lisa,
oh no-this does not look like spring at all. In Vienna we had the same picture- cold weather and snow. Though, for the last three days the weather has improved a bit. Still rather cold, but at least the snow has melted and temperatures above zero. I used the opportunity and worked a lot in my garden. I made several new flower beds. It was a lot of work, but at the same time so exciting. I really hope the weather will gradually improve from now on. I am so much longing for a bit more green in the garden. Has the weather in SW Indiana improved since you wrote this post?
Regarding your comment on my cyclamen coum plants, I planted them in late winter 2017 and was afraid they might die as I hadn´t grown cyclamen before. I just remember that many years ago my mum planted cyclamen in the garden and they just vanished. Nevertheless, I wanted to give it a try and was very much surprised that they are thriving and even self sowing everywhere. Maybe you should give it another try with growing them? Maybe another area in the garden. I grow cyclamen coum at two areas in my garden and in one area they are not thriving. They still live but don´t look very healthy, neither are they self seeding. However, most of my cyclamen coum I grow under a hibiscus bush. During summer the soil there is very dry and in winter/spring it is moist. I don´t remove the fallen trees from the hibiscus as I once read that cyclamen coum like some leave mold. Otherwise, I am not doing anything at all.
I wish you great weather for gardening and a lovely week!
    Best wishes,
    Lisa

    1. Lisa, thank you for the encouragement regarding the cyclamen. I might give them another try sometime if I run into them for sale around here. Our weather has improved somewhat. It rained here all day today with a dash of hail. I guess we can say that is an improvement. Still running about 10 degrees colder than normal but it is better than below freezing temps and snow. I hope you have a lovely week and are able to get out in the garden some.
