Garden Bloggers Bloom Day - January 2009

What with us in the deep freeze with single digit temps here at mid day I can only say I don't have any blooms. I was inspired by a quote in the notebook that I am using right now. This quote is by Henry Ward Beecher. He inspired me to go into the way back files and dig out some photos of blooms that I could use to illustrate this enchanting quote.

"What a pity flowers can utter no sound!

A singing rose,

a whispering violet,

a murmuring honeysuckle-oh, what a rare and exquisite miracle would these be!"

And isn't it funny that after you find one quote you like by an author you see several more not long after. I hope you read inspiring quotes during these freezing days while you have visions of singing, whispering, murmuring blooms in your head if not in your garden.

For more blooms go to Carol's May Dreams Garden.

  1. With the frozen tundra outside, we must make due with past colors. Inspiration in the photo files!

  2. I DO like your quotes, Lisa... and your file photos. My wish for you on this cold day is that they keep you happy until once again you have flowers singing and whispering you to the garden with them.

  3. Oh, I like your positive perspective towards things, Lisa. The rosy rose definitely seems to be singing through my speakers.

  5. Poor you....the freeze has left us now and I hope it does not come back....two weeks of below average temps was not good....

  6. I love your quote, and I collect books of quotations. Your photos are beautiful. My own post today is not amazing, certainly not as funny as my friend's letter and photo of the Inaugural Poppy - also posted.

  8. Perfect photos to go along with your quote. Must have been fun to look thru your pictures of warmer days.

I had to laugh at one of your comments on another blog-I feel the same way about my laptop in the winter!

    Stay warm.

  9. I will have to dig for old photos too. It is frozen here and a low of 9 predicted for tonight.

  10. Ah, yes, they are all calling my name. Only a few more months, and we'll get to see those roses again. Thanks for such an interesting turn on Bloom Day.~~Dee

Yes, I love finding great quotes and used to keep a book of them. Used to being the key word here.

  13. Hi Lisa, that quote is a cheering one and you have found the perfect illustrations. I love the singing rose, it is a fancy schmancy one, must be a opera singer! :-)

  14. Thanks for this quote with these images. Just what the doctor ordered on this rock-solid, cold day.

I have Beecher on my blog. He's good. This is a wonderful poem.

  15. What a lovely quote, and your musings on the subject show me a new way to enjoy flowers.
I'm reminded of a story about a deaf father and his hearing daughter. Since the father had been told that rain makes different sounds when it strikes grass and sidewalks, he asked his daughter to describe the sound sun made when it touched different surfaces.

  16. Lisa.
I thought the first one was a camellia at first. I think I can hear them. ;)

  18. A beautiful post, Lisa! Your roses were singing to me to cheer me up while I sit here sneezing and sniffling; the violets and honeysuckle were whispering that spring will be here soon.

  19. Love the quote - I think I hear a Trumpet flower!

  20. How poetic, Lisa, and very creative to boot! I hope reading garden prose cheers you up and helps you get through the blowing cold.

  21. Yup. Me too. Heading off to the photo files to pretend that there's something blooming here. Heeee!

  22. Your photos are lovely, and the idea so romantic, Lisa.

Maybe one must live where it's frozen to imagine the flowers singing and whispering and murmuring. Here where the garden never sleeps mine could talk like the flowers in Alice in Wonderland's garden, saying, "She forgot to mulch me again!" "This bed is too hard" "Get off the computer and turn on the hose!"

But if your imagination can keep you warm, keep dreaming!

  23. No blooms for me today either, Lisa. I'm showing -10 degrees on Weatherbug. It is FREEZING!
We will definitely appreciate spring when it arrives won't we?

  25. You may not have blooms but that quote is certainly blooming. ;-)

    Happy GBBD Lisa!

  26. Hi again Lisa :-)

Great spin for GBBD. The first rose does seem noisy doesn’t it? Great matching of quotes and pics – they made me smile :-D

Happy Bloom Day! Have a great weekend birding – if you manage to get out in the cold. Maybe it will be a flask of hot coffee in the car and looking out the windows ;-)

  27. I LOVE quotes and your flower photos for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day are gorgeous!

  28. I 'swear' I came here yesterday and left a comment. Honestly. I really liked how you used the prose with each flower, the way it was illustrated and how it 'looked' on the page:) I like the blooms, too--of course.
I have TONS of file photos which I am just too lazy to get out right now. I feel tired and just want to read & comment on others' blogs. I haven't even done a GBBD post yet. I might still have time...I'm not sure. I'm just so tired of posting...it's more fun reading and looking at flowers on blogs like yours.

  30. But flowers make such a visual statement, they don't need words! :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love your whimsical humor! The words fit the flowers so perfectly. I always smile when I come over to your blog, Lisa. Thank you for that.

  32. Yes, whispering and singing flowers are better than howling winds and all that cold, cold weather.

Thanks for reminding us that eventually, we'll have some blooms in Indiana again.

  34. Thoreau provides perfect winter quotes, I agree.

  35. Oh I meant he would be another one for quotes! I am not as familiar with Beecher.

  36. I know you're missing your lovely garden, Lisa, but the birds are keeping you busy and happy, with lots of great sightings by the sound of things.
I looked at your painting of Pam's rosebud. Lovely! I can see you're never bored :)
I've read some lovely quotes throughout the blogisphere, accompanied by photos of beautiful blooms, and always find them encouraging. Your archived photos are lovely to see on this white winter day. I love the quote too. Interesting to think about which flowers would make a particular sound :)
