As the weather fronts collided the rain came and washed away the snow. Happily as the snow melted some winter buds came into view.
The Galanthus certainly grew since I had last laid eyes on them.
Daffodils and Narcissus are poking out of the ground.
A few hellebore buds are peeking out. I got itchy seeing all of the leaves around these plants. The neat nik in me wanted to remove them but my better gardener self said 'don't you dare it is only January'.
Sure enough the warm front that brought the rain was pushed out by Arctic winds that brought the cold. The rain didn't have a chance to soak into the ground or drain off. All froze in place.
Obviously there is a bit of a dip in the garden where the paths lay.
I probably won't be putting anything in the compost for a while. Maybe the sun will take care of some of this ice but I rather doubt it since it is not to get above freezing anytime soon.
You all take care and stay warm.
Ah Lisa - you at least are seeing some signs of life underneath the snow. We are very cold here too. Replied to your Gluten free on my reply...if you have an email address will write you and share some recipes with you. Take care and stay warm. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteHi Debbie, I sent you an email so you should have my email addie. Believe me I am dressed warm enough to be comfortable. Have a great weekend.
DeleteI'm sorry your spring preview was so short-lived. Our weather is headed into summer-like territory this weekend but I hope that switch will also be relatively brief and that more rain will find us again soon.
ReplyDeleteWeather is more winter-like now. I hope it holds off some of the spring plants that are trying to come out too early. I used to worry about this but have found over the years that the blooms won't be damaged by cold weather. Have a good weekend.
DeleteMoving on to see the news.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful.
Good weekend.
I hope you have a good weekend tooo.
DeleteWonderful photos of the winter buds ~ do hope you are warm ~

I am quite toasty. I don't mind wearing layers when it is this cold. It is like having a big hug. Have a fun weekend. Keep warm.
DeleteI can’t wait to see your hellebores open. How long will it be before the daffodils come up? I have a few popping out of the ground here in Austin, but my hellebores have no signs of bloom yet - I’m afraid we’ve just been too warm.
ReplyDeleteEverything is on hold now that it has turned so cold. It will all depend on the weather when the hellebores bloom. It will be at least a month probably.
ReplyDeleteExciting to get a peek at what's to come when that ice finally melts and warmer temperatures return.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about wanting to cut back the hellebore leaves.
ReplyDeleteWhat a burst of spring feeling to see green! Just finished reading about the snow and cold heading our way. Could break some weather records. Ugh. Stay warm.
ReplyDeleteThe Arctic Vortex is about to descend upon us all here in the midwest. Brrrrrrrrrr
DeleteIce! Yikes! Hope all your bulbs take it in stride. Galanthus are so lovely.
ReplyDeleteI have learned over the years not to worry about those little green leaves peeking out of the ground. They can be frozen many times and thawed then bloom just fine later. It just seems like it gets earlier and earlier each year.
DeleteThat ice looks like nothing considering the cold that's on the way! Nice to see snowdrops already open though, mine here are still just barely out except for a few special ones which are supposed to be ridiculously early.
ReplyDeleteKeep warm!
Yes, the Arctic Vortex is about to test our Mid West tenacious spirit. Hang on to your hat, get your ice grips out and heat up the hot chocolate.
DeleteOh dear, that is delightful to see, although I'm guessing you will be affected somewhat by the polar vortex this week? Thankfully, it won't stick around long. Even here in the Madison area, our forecast is calling for above-freezing temps just a few days after a record cold windchill on Wednesday night. Brrrr... Stay warm, Lisa and Lisa's plants!
ReplyDeleteGosh yes Beth we are being warned early about this Arctic Vortex. Not a thing a person can do about it. Crazy up and down weathers. Heat up your hot chocolate, grab a book and settle in.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping all those tender bulbs and shoots are surviving the deep freeze settling on us now.
ReplyDeleteGreat having you visit again~ we got snow (not much) again this morning ~ looong winter ~

Oh my, how wonderful to see these early blooms! I haven't checked anything in the garden in a long time, but I'm sure nothing was emerging before the polar vortex hit us. Hope you are doing well and staying warm, Lisa!
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say there has been no progression of these early arrivals what with the cold. It has been cold here but not near as bad as up by you. No snow to protect things. We seem to have been on the most Southern edge of the snow that hit up your way. Just a skiff of snow now and then. Stay warm. This too shall pass...at least that is what I have been telling myself. :)
DeleteAt least we are in the double digits today ~hope to get a walk in with my furry friend this afternoon ~ Stay warm and cozy ~ ^_^
