Carolina Wrens Nesting

I just had told my DB that I wanted to get some pansies for the window box at the kitchen window and I noticed wren action. The Carolina Wrens are building a nest in the greenery in the window box. As some of you might recall, I put a wren box at one end of the window box as a decoration.
The Carolina wrens don't use this type of nesting box. They like to make their big nests in something but nothing as small as a Wren nesting box. The House Wrens, which haven't returned for the summer, do use the boxes.
It is fun to watch the pair build their nest. The male and female work at bringing materials to the building site. They use leaves, duff, feathers and any other material that they find suitable.
Obviously I couldn't get my camera to ignore the screen I was looking through. All of the birds in the neighborhood are singing up a storm. There will soon be nests everywhere.

  3. I think the wire screen makes for an interesting effect for the photograph image...almost as if it is a woven tapestry!

Nice photos of wrens...I'm sure they enjoy the "privacy screen"!

  4. Hi Lisa,

Cyndy has beaten me to it!! My first thought on seeing your photos with the screen in front was that it would be lovely to make them into needlepoint pictures.

Your Wrens are so different from ours.

  7. Hi Lisa - I know I am supposed to comment on the Bloom Day post, but I just love these wrens so can I comment here, too? We usually have robins nesting here, but haven't seen any yet this year. They usually set themselves up under our deck. Hope you'll give us a progress report on these sweeties.

  12. The wrens love to be near us I think ...finding spots close to the house. Recently, we have some nesting in the hanging plant just outside our front door. But in the past they've made them ON the front door wreath. They are so fun to watch.

Shy Songbird, a needlepoint picture is a fun image too.

Jgh, You bet I will be giving progress reports. I hope to see the young ones fledge.

Ruthie, Yes we usually have Carolina Wrens in the neighborhood all year. It is fun to have these little birds eating up all the bugs in the garden. They are always active and fun to watch.

Thank you all for commenting about our first nesters of the year. They are a joy to watch as your comments are a joy to read.

  24. Oh, how fun to watch just outside your window Lisa. :c) I put out my ball of nesting material yesterday to assist in the frenzy of nest building and already found a beautiful bluebird nest in my bluebird house.

  25. How exciting to have the wrens nesting! Will it spoil your plans for pansies in the windowbox? I guess you could put them in a pot instead :)

  26. Hi Kerri, yes it is fun to have blooms and sweet little wrens nesting in the garden again. I have planted pansies in pots around front. I don't mind giving up my window box for the first nesting. They usually move someplace else for their second nesting becasue we are outside so much more when it warms up.

  28. Cool! I wonder if we have these. I'm certain we do. They look really familiar. I need to learn my birds!

Note to self: Learn my birds.

You're right - the birds are singing like crazy! I love hearing it!

  29. Many is the time we've accidentally watered a wren in a hanging basket. She'll get very fussy when wet.

Thanks for sharing your nesting wrens.

  36. What good luck to have wrens building a nest so close to your window, Lisa. I would be setting up camp watching them and getting nothing else accomplished. Let's hope they have a little family so we can all see even more photos.
