Auction Action

This weekend I went to an auction of plants. This was a first for me. I have been to many auctions but an auction selling nursery stock was a first for me. I only came home with a couple of items. Mainly because they weren't selling things I particularly needed. However I didn't come home empty handed of course.

Below is one of those contorted blue spruces. I am not sure of the name of it because the nursery had removed all the tags from the plants. I have a suspesion that there was more than one nursery involved and they removed their tags to protect their identity. Anyway, I have always admired these contorted spruces. They look like they should be underwater or on another planet. This one landed in a pot at the center of my knot garden for now. I want it as a focal point someplace and can't find decide where that might be. The other purchase I made was a buckeye shrub. It has some pretty blooms. I had the perfect spot for it at the end of the patio. It is a fairly large shrub already. I am pleased that it will stop the eye at this end of the paito.
I hope that you all had a fun weekend too. I also got some pots planted that will have to wait for another post... Have a good work week.

  1. A plant auction sounds like fun! I bet you got a good deal on that spruce. My daughter-in-law has been eyeing these, but decided they were way too expensive. I think yours looks great right in the middle of the bed it's in right now.

  6. Lisa,
You did manage to find a couple of treasures, didn't you? My great grandfather carried a buckeye in his pocket all his life for luck, when he passed my grangmother carried it the rest of her life, now my aunt has it. :-)That seed must be over 100 years old by now.

  7. I've never heard of a plant auction, either. Bet it was fun though. Your buckeye looks lovely and the Spruce is interesting. I'm sure someone will know the name, but I don't. Playing with plants makes for the best weekends.

  14. A nursery near here holds a fall auction and everything sells at rock bottom prices. But it can take the whole day before they get around to the plants you want. We only went once but it was fun and we bought something as well.

  15. Great choices Lisa. I like the spruce where you put it and I think the buckeye will certainly be a conversation piece on your patio. I didn't know there was any kind of auction you hadn't been to. :) Glad you enjoyed it though.

  17. Hi Lisa, that looks like a weeping blue atlas cedar? A plant auction? I never heard of such a thing, but it sounds like fun! Your purchases are great, I know the buckeye gets wonderful flowers, is that right?

  18. Lisa, I think you scored with both of those. Those trees are very popular now in Oklahoma because they can handle the heat and drought. Also they make good foundation plantings. I had a wonderful weekend with gardening on Sunday. Worked so hard I nearly fell asleep in Mass. LOL.~~Dee

  20. It sounds like you got good plants, Lisa - and enjoyed the 'game' part of buying something at an auction.

Did you get to look at the plants up close before you bid on them or just had to go by what the auctioneer said?

  22. What fun Lisa! You are going to love Aesculus pavia..It's a lovely shrub/tree. It didn't flower this year, not sure why...could have been the drought here last year. Love your knoty garden very much! gail

  23. Phillip, they said that the business was not going out of business. It appeared to be relatively new so maybe this was a promotion to let people know where they were located.

Jamie & Randy, that is a great story about the buckeye. People around here also know of the luck of the buckeye. Unfortunately this shrub won't produce the buckeyes of good luck. If it did I would be in big trouble with it planted by the house. I have some buckeyes from a tree that grows not far from our house. I just love the feel of them.

Pam, I think the prices were quite good on most things. As any auction there were items that went for what you would normally pay. I think I did very well with my purchases.

Frances, this shrub has beautiful blooms on it right now. I will try for some photos at my next opportunity.

Annie, we arrived early enough that we could look at the plants offered for sale. They were surprisingly in great health. I think there was more than one nursery selling their products there as some were marked with different colors of ribbon and they made mention of it to the clerk.

Gail, thanks for the id of the Buckeye. I hope it doesn't get so large. The sign on it stated that it only gets 4-6'tall. If it is what you say it is it will be twice as tall. UGH.. I hope not. Either that or I will be clipping it back all the time, or moving it.

Thank you all for stopping by and enjoying my auction purchases.

  24. That sounds like a neat thing. Probably plenty to learn there. There is a garden near us that sells antique plants but does not auction them. This sounds like a gardener's adventure.

  25. Lisa, I hope you show us the progress on that contorted tree! I really like it and would love to have something "odd" like that, too. Quite the conversation piece. Did you have fun???

  26. Plant auction isn't familiar to me too. But you were lucky and found two plants you liked!
    Have a nice weekend!
