Once Again Blue

Once again today I am sort of blue. A little different shade of blue. I am blue because we had to have a tree removed from the back garden. A beautiful old Black Locust tree. I always loved the way this tree spread out like a fan. Mainly because of the power lines behind it. It had been trimmed and cut back to within an inch of it's life on one side.
The power company came rumbling into the garden with their big truck. I was pleasantly surprised about how sensitive they seemed to be to the other plants and trees they had to come through to get to the Locust.
They got set up and began the removal. Going...
The power company was afraid that the tree would fall onto the lines and then push the lines into the neighbors pool. That being a worse case scenario. The left side as we look at it was towering over the yard barn well withing reach of the pool if it fell the wrong way. Great care had to be taken with these heavy cuts of logs. Going...
The afternoon heated up like a mid summer day. Going...
Sad thinking about the butterflies and birds that depended on this tree. Going...
Going...
Going...
As you can see it isn't quite Gone. It won't be long and hopefully our neighbor that has a fireplace will be over to cart away the remains. Then as all Gardeners realize I will be trying to figure out what I want to replace this tree. I have been thinking about it for some weeks knowing that this tree had to go. I kept putting it out of my mind because with this removal our back garden is going from shade to much more sun. I need a different mind set. I am having a difficult time trying to decide what to do.
What to do?

  2. It's always so sad to lose a tree:( On the bright side, now you'll be able to plant lots of sun-loving plants! We have a tree that needs to come down, too, but at least it's an ash and wasn't particularly pretty. I've been thinking of different types of trees to replace it; I'm still in love with the tri-color beech though it's supposed to be a little difficult to get established here. I just hope the Lawnmower Man lets me plant a replacement tree--he's getting tired of mowing around all our trees.

  3. It is always sad to see a tree cut down but sometimes it has to happen. It seems they took care when doing so, which was good.

I am sure you will decide what to plant in its place.

    Take Care

    All the best Jan

  4. How sad Lisa.
A garden is always changing.....nothing stays the same.
I am sure you will find something that will suit this area perfectly.
Don't rush......I find I always make mistakes when I do.

Look forward to seeing what you plant........

  6. Losing a tree is very personal and feels like a member of the family. A big hole that's hard to fill. Have you thought about a completely different kind of tree like a Magnolia? At the moment I am seeing lots of big Magnolias and being very impressed with their size: large but not massive.

  7. Farewell, poor tree. No wonder you are blue. But think of all the extra sun you have.

  8. Lisa girl I am late visiting but wow ! You have changed up your blog and it is looking great !
I am sorry about your tree .. it is sad .. it was such a "main character" in your garden and you chose plants that suited the area because of the shade this tree provided.
Will we see a post soon on what type of tree you have decided on ? You have me very curious .. a tree is such a future investment for your garden and for the wildlife and I know you are very thoughtful about that type of decision.
I can't wait to find out!
Mean while back at the farm here .. a tiny bit of rain has fallen .. just a teaser and we aren't so hot .. but they threaten us with wet ? snowflurries next week ... really ????? BIG sigh !

  10. Wow, that's a big change! We have several black locusts, and I really love them.

Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy the sun in your yard and add some new plants to take your mind off the missing tree.

  11. It's sad to see a big tree being taken down. Does this open up more sun on your garden?

  12. I see those tree sections as plant pedestals and I also see a lot more sun in your garden. The garden never stays the same. Nice that the workers took care with your garden.

  13. Beautiful photos and sad to lose a tree you were attached to ~ Glad the company was cautious about the other trees and garden ~ Didn't think they could come on one's property ~

Happy Week to you ~ ^_^

  14. Ohh, sad! :( My mom just cut a big ol' tree, too. It's not on the par of losing some things, but it's still really sad. I'm sure you will figure out the perfect thing from here, though!

  15. Maybe you could turn that area into a wildlife garden and add some sun-loving shrubs and perennials to bring back the butterflies. It will help the spot feel less empty.

  16. Oh yes, that's quite a change! We have several trees that are toward the ends of their lives. It does make a huge difference to lose a big old tree like that. Have you considered a Redbud? They're native to much of Eastern North America and they having beautiful blooms in mid-spring. There are so many wonderful mid-size trees. Keep us posted on what you decide to plant. :)
